For over 25 years we have been providing you with quality information about the hotel/lodging industry. During those years many travelers have asked me how we identify and select the elegant small hotels from the
many hotels/lodging facilities that are offered around the world today. For us to even consider a particular hotel, it must first have met our level of standards. Other factors we have kept in mind, while separating

By "elegant", we mean decor-and also something more. If a hotel is to be one's home away from home its atmosphere should be like that of a fine residence. The feeling should be reflected not only in design, color and
furnishings, but also in those little touches that really matter; fresh flowers, nightly turn down (with a chocolate!), overnight shoeshine, luxurious toiletries and over sized towel...all the myriad details that
add up to the intangible quality we call elegance.
When we say "small" we generally mean fewer than 400 guest rooms; in fact, the typical hotel selected for inclusion in this Internet directory (or our printed guide) has approximately half that number. We have found that small hotels are best able to offer the high staff-to-guest ratio enabling a genuine concern for each guest's comfort and pleasure.
If you are among those travelers for whom fine cuisine is a top priority, we agree completely! We have chosen our hotels with excellent dining in mind. If you conduct business while traveling, such facilities as teleconferencing and Internet access and perhaps an appropriately sized meeting or conference room, will be essential; and, if you are among the growing number of people to whom physical fitness is a personal must, your hotel should provide in house facilities such as swimming pool, tennis, spa and massage room, and perhaps weight training equipment. Many of our recommended hotels also arrange guest privileges at prestigious private country clubs and health centers.
