Prior to the arrival of prospectors in the year 1879, the Ute Native Americans inhabited Aspen. With the discovery of large deposits of silver ore, Aspen rose to prominence as one of the United States’ most productive silver mining districts. The passage of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act doubled the government’s silver purchases. However, in 1893, when the act was repealed, many of the Aspen mines were closed and the economy declined ailing with the population. It wasn’t until the year of 1936 that Aspen would see some hope in regards to economic recovery. This was sparked by the introduction of the new winter sport of skiing. The start of World War II delayed the “boom” skiing would produce for Aspen, however, by 1948, everything was in place for Aspen to become not only a ski resort but a place where the body, mind and spirit could be nourished. Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke , prominent Chicago industrialists and philanthropists, brought vision, culture and financial backing to develop Aspen’s potential as a world-class destination for the nourishment of the complete being.
