Auckland History

The Maori were the first settlers of the Auckland area in the year 1350. It was estimated that their population was about 20,000 prior to the arrival of Europeans. As firearms were introduced to the native people, inter-tribal warfare erupted and resulted in a huge decline in their population. As European settlement of New Zealand began there were only small numbers of Maori alive. The land, on which the cities of Auckland, North Shore and a part of Rodney District were built, was purchased by Joseph Brooks Weller in 1832 for the price of one large cask of powder. Auckland was declared the capital of New Zealand in 1841 but only held the title until 1865 when it was deemed that Wellington was a better choice because of its proximity to the South Island. Auckland was the base against the Maori King Movement (creation of a symbolic role as monarch to unite the Maori people) in the 1860’s. The European population spread south with the building of roads and the mercantile economic theory. Trams and railways would follow further expanding Auckland’s landscape. The introduction of the automobile further defined the urban landscape by allowing a suburban style of building (single family homes) which results in low population density. Auckland is one of the few cities in the world with two harbors on separate bodies of water. The more than 50 islands that make up the marine element of Auckland, make it seem less city-like and offer the luxury hotel guest amazing opportunities to explore and seek adventure.

Auckland Attractions

The Auckland Memorial War Museum, New Zealand’s first museum, offers a great place for the luxury hotel visitor to become acquainted with the history of Auckland. It is much more than a war memorial, as the luxury hotel guest has the unique opportunity to learn about the Maori natives and European settlers through decorative arts, pictorial collections and natural history exhibits. Auckland Harbor is home to the National Maritime Museum where the luxury hotel visitor can view exhibits depicting New Zealand’s seafaring past, including whaling and the KZ1 racing sloop that competed in the 1988 America’s Cup Challenge.
