Boston History
Before the arrival of the Puritans, religious dissidents from England, and their founding of Boston in 1630, the Algonquin nation of regional tribes subsisted by seasonally migrating throughout New England, raising crops in summer, fishing and hunting, following sources of food between the coast and the interior. Much of this population was devastated by the smallpox epidemic of 1616-17 and as a result, the Shawmut Peninsula, the promontory of land on which Boston was established, was largely uninhabited when the Puritans arrived. The Puritan ethic of hard work, spiritual health and self-discipline created a stable and well-structured society.
This ethic led to the founding of America’s first public school, Boston Latin School (1635) and the first American college, Harvard College (1636), both of which are still educating students and have been responsible for instructing many prominent public figures. The belief in the importance of education prompted Boston to be the first US city to have a public library (1636). The industriousness created fortunes in fishing, shipbuilding and commerce with Europe and the Caribbean. It was Bostonians who incited revolutionary activity during the Colonial era, which led to such historic events as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and the battles of Lexington and Concord. Visitors quickly realize that something of historical interest is just outside the door of your luxury small hotel.
