Camden History

Given the name Megunticook by the Penobscot Abenaki Indians, Camden was first settled in the early 1770’s by James Richards. Where Richards went, a few followed, trying to till the rocky, mountainous land around Camden. Of course, they were often less than successful. Camden was a rendezvous point for American soldiers during the Revolutionary War, and it was finally incorporated into Maine as Camden on February 17, 1791. The War of 1812 came and went without much effect on Camden, likely because of the fort built in Camden. As there was no one fit to operate the cannons in the fort, however, Camden was extremely lucky. As peace returned, Camden found its calling in becoming a port city and a center of industry. Sawmills, gristmills, factories, and blacksmith shops became a part of everyday Camden. By 1886, Camden’s industry encompassed railroad cars, lime, mattresses, and much more. The success of Camden’s industrial facilities led to enormous city wealth. This resulted in Camden residents building homes with fine architecture. The combination of this architecture and mountain backdrop led to Camden’s success as a tourist town. Camden supported itself with schooner cruises until Hollywood got wind of the scenery. The famous movie Carousel was set in Camden which further boosted its reputation as a beautiful luxury hotel destination. Since then Camden has enjoyed success as a tourist attraction. The fine architectural homes have mostly been converted into service buildings, but their beauty remains as a sight that any luxury hotel traveler will appreciate. Camden’s architectural wonders, mountains and beaches are something that should not be missed on a memorable luxury hotel getaway.

Camden Windjammer Festival

Held in September, the Windjammer Festival, also called the Windjammer Weekend, celebrates Camden’s history as a port. Camden’s festival celebrates mostly the ships and the lifestyle that luxury hotel travelers enjoy. Replicas of schooners, windjammers, and modern yachts all vie for space in Camden’s historic harbor. A luxury hotel getaway in September is not complete without visiting the Camden Windjammer Festival. Although the ships are the main focus of the festival, the luxury hotel visitor will find other exciting activities are offered in Camden. Live music, tours of lighthouses, a scrumptious pancake breakfast and even an outdoor featured flick commemorate the early days of Camden’s life as a harbor city.
