Chatham History

The first 100 years of Chatham’s history were challenging. The difficulty in settling the area, maintaining a steady population, and growing food in adverse conditions are a testament to the fortitude to its settlers. After the Revolutionary War, Chatham began to flourish. Its roots as a fishing and whaling town began in the late 1700s, and the population and town boomed. As one of the largest maritime cities in the colonies, Chatham prospered until 1851. In that year, a breach occurred on the North Beach, which meant that whaling and fishing began to decline. Chatham’s population plummeted, and continued to do so through the Civil War. After 1887, however, Chatham began to rise in popularity once more. The rich were looking for places to build resorts. Chatham seemed an ideal place, with plenty of coastline and sea air. With these people came innovation; a railroad, telegraph, and newspapers were all added to Chatham in these years. After WWII, Chatham became ever more popular as a tourist spot with a summer population almost double that of its permanent residents. Today, Chatham enjoys over 20,000 summer visitors and residents, all due to its isolation and exposure to the ocean.
