The Caddo Native Americans prior to being claimed by Spain along with the rest of Texas in the 1500’s inhabited Dallas. When Mexico declared independence from Spain in the year 1821, Dallas became part of the state of Coahuila y Tejas. In 1836, the Republic of Texas, which included Dallas, broke away from Mexico and became an independent country for almost ten years. While looking for a place to create a trading post for Native Americans and settlers, John Neely Bryan surveyed the Dallas area, a natural ford along the Trinity River floodplain. In 1841, it was decided to make a permanent settlement instead, and therefore, Dallas was founded. The intersection of north-south and east-west railroad routes in Dallas led the city to become a commercial and industrial center rather than an agriculturally based economy. Dallas was the center of trade for cotton, grain and buffalo. Dallas led the world in the manufacture of saddlery and cotton gin machinery. Into the 20th century, Dallas embraced the banking, insurance and fashion retailing industries. The famous Neiman Marcus department store was born in Dallas in 1907. While the rest of the United States was suffering through the Great Depression, oil was discovered one hundred miles east of Dallas. The oil boom caused Dallas to become the financial center for the oil industry in Texas and Oklahoma. However, the boom was short lived as prices fell and overproduction impacted Dallas’s economy. Dallas became a manufacturing center of jeeps and military truck during World War II. In the post war years, Dallas evolved into the nation’s third largest technology center.
