Kansas City History
Part of the Louisiana Purchase, Kansas City was first to ever be explored by Americans Lewis and Clark in the early 1800’s describing it as a good place to construct a fort because of its location at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers . In 1831, a group of Latter-Day Saints settled in Kansas City but abandoned their settlement when forced out by mob violence. Three years later was the first official settlement of Westport Landing and in 1850 became incorporated as the Town of Kansas, predecessor to modern day Kansas City. Kansas City suffered during the Civil War, as many military engagements were fought on its soil. After the Civil War, Kansas City began to flourish sparked by being selected for the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad Bridge over the Missouri River. As the city began to be a center for cattle and slaughterhouses, barbeque was introduced to the city by Henry Perry. Although Kansas proclaimed prohibition in the 1920’s, Kansas City didn’t suffer; those who lived over the border simply went over to the Missouri side of the city. A political machine of the Democrats arrived, begun by Tom Pendergast. De facto leader of the city until his death in 1939, Pendergast is most remembered for giving young politician Harry S. Truman his start. After World War II, Kansas City began to finally become an urbanized city. The 1980’s saw a small disaster for Kansas City; the Hyatt Regency walkway collapse killed 114 people, and injured 200 more.
