Negril Luxury Small Hotels

Small boutique hotels offer both an idyllic hideaway and the intimacy of an attentive staff to cater to your individual needs. Set in lush surroundings with breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea and indigenous foliage, the architecture of most small luxury hotels in Negril reflects a mixture of African, Spanish and baroque British styles. Verandas make visible the thatched Tiki huts of outdoor entertainment areas, a great place to take a break from the sun and feel the gentle breeze. The amenities offer the comforts of home with beautiful décor in restful hues, you’re sure to feel refreshed after a plush night’s sleep. You’re in the “Capital of Casual” so put away your suit and tie, don some white cotton pants, a swimming suit and hat, you’re in the land of luxury, relaxation and beauty.

Negril History

The Spanish were the first to discover Negril in the late 1400’s. Just south of this small village are black cliffs, believed to be the inspiration for the Spanish name “Negrillo”. Aside from a few brief British naval exits and entrances, and pirate captures, most of Negril’s history begins in the twentieth century when it was recognized as an island paradise. You will create your own history and memories when you stay in the elegant comfort, luxury and intimacy of a Negril luxury small hotel.

Negril Beach and Famous Cliffs

The beaches of Negril’s are touted to be some of the finest in the world. A sandbar on Negril’s coast, starting at the Negril River and going north to Rutland Point, has created approximately 7 miles of white sand beaches that will captivate the beachgoers' heart. Two bays along this strip provide bathers with pristine beach surroundings. Bloody Bay, is a horseshoe shaped bay so named because in the days of whaling, the whales would be chased into the bay and once trapped here, it was easy for them to be slaughtered. Long Bay is Jamaica’s longest beach with calm shallow water and perfect temperature. Continuing south along the West End Road, just past the Negril downtown district are the famous black cliffs, thought to be how the village got its name. The crystal clear waters below the cliffs are popular with divers wanting to plunge from the 40 foot elevation. Until the latter part of the 20th century, Negril was a small fishing village with a lighthouse guiding sailors safely along Jamaica’s western coast. In 1974, an establishment known as Rick’s Café opened atop these cliffs offering a stunning view, especially at sunset, that is not to be missed. For some it has become a Negril tradition. Although it has twice been destroyed by hurricanes,, it was rebuilt despite the devastation and will surely continue to provide a spectacular experience for all those who visit. Several luxury small hotels are located along the cliff’s edge, offering private bungalows and magnificent suites jutting over the seaside. Whether you want to dig your toes into the powdery white sand or enjoy a leisurely day atop a secluded cliff with a book and fruity cocktail, the tranquility, peace and beauty of Negril is sure to please.

Belvedere Estate

If you’re looking for a change of pace from the sand and waters of Negril, the Belvedere Estate makes a wonderful half day trip near to Negril. This family owned working sugar cane plantation takes the visitor through the history and rigors of sugar cane production as you witness the boiling of cane juice to extract a wet brown sugar. The setting of the estate provides a glimpse at Jamaica’s diverse landscape, which includes indigenous flora and fauna, rivers and waterfalls.

Negril Activities

A day on the open sea may be the perfect way to relax or travel to another Jamaican destination. The Negril Yacht Club offers exclusive day trips as well as extended trips, daily sunset cruises, glass bottom boat tours and deep sea fishing charters. Return to the comfort and elegance of your luxury small hotel to savor the day’s events and enjoy being back on land. Make sure to ask your concierge which fishing spots are the least populated and offer the best catch. Most often, your concierge is your best resource.

If you need a little physical activity to stimulate you, consider some lessons in wind surfing, scuba diving or snorkeling. There are many local shops with good reputations following proper safety procedures and taking you to hot spots you might not find on your own, so consult with your hotel staff for a recommendation, they may offer those services at the property as most luxury small hotels want to provide a complete package to their guests and know others who can assist you if not, away from the crowds and packed groups.

Just past Rick’s Café, on the West End Road, is the Negril Point Lighthouse. From its inception in 1894, ships have safely navigated Jamaica’s western shore and the coral reef at Negril first by a kerosene powered lamp and now solar powered. Climb the 103 steps of the spiral staircase especially at sunset for a most spectacular view guaranteed to take your breath away.

Scuba Diving and Glass Bottom Boats

For an up close and personal way to experience the Negril’s marine life, climb into a glass bottom boat and take a guided tour, or don a buoyancy compensator and scuba gear, either way, get up close and personal with the marine life offered in Negril’s Caribbean waters. The placid water is warm year round with visibility of up to 100 feet. Swim amongst many varieties of coral, fish, turtles and sponges and don’t forget an underwater camera to capture the bright colors and funny looking fish.. If your skills need refreshing or you are interested in becoming a certified diver there are programs available that your small luxury hotel personnel can direct you to.

A special place of interest for snorkelers and divers alike is the Negril Marine Park. Since 1998, the Negril Coral Reef Preservation Society has protected this 160 square kilometer area that is native to angelfish, triggerfish, starfish and octopus. The tranquil crystal clear waters will give you a new appreciation for marine life.

Negril Local Flora and Fauna

If you’re interested in a nature experience, a 350+ acre preserve known as the Great Morass may just very well do the trick. Witness the stand of Jamaican Royal Palms towering in this protected area, where you can take a two-hour tour of the surrounding swamp viewing the exotic birds, crocodiles and some 114 plant species.

Safari tours are another way to enjoy the indigenous species to be found near Negril. Embark on a boat tour along the Black River, Jamaica’s largest navigable river and wetland area. The remote mangrove swamps are home to crocodiles which you might even be able to feed. There are over 100 bird species here and three types of mangroves. Definitely a great photo opportunity for any shutterbug!

Negril’s Reggae Marathon

Once a year, in December, runners from around the world gather on the Negril shoreline to participate in the Reggae Marathon. The sun hasn’t risen yet and everyone awaits the sound of the horn marking the beginning of the race. Rastafarian drummers and Reggae music encourage the participants as they make their way along the 7-mile beach area whether they are running a full, half marathon or 10 K. If you’re not a runner you can still enjoy the events associated with the marathon. Ask your concierge if there is a VIP area available for reservation or if your luxury small hotel sets up a common area for its guests.

Negril Island Style Eating

Negril offers a wonderful selection of restaurants to suit the most discerning palate. Given the relaxed lifestyle practiced here, fast food is not an option (unless you’re looking for hot Jamaican patties or something fresh from a bakery). But that doesn’t mean your budget won’t be accommodated. What you will find is lots of variety, romance, exquisite architecture, great locations and exotic décor.

Seafood and fresh fish caught daily, Jamaican food, dim sum, North American and International cuisines are some of the food choices you’ll find.

If atmosphere is important you’ll find lots of it. You can dine on a cliff overlooking the bay or right on the ocean’s edge. Perhaps a beach barbecue is more your style, or a hip party bar with a giant water trampoline. No doubt you won’t go hungry.

Some traditional island dishes you don’t want to pass up, that best represent the island include: Jamaican beef patties (flaky dough filled with beef, chicken or vegetarian); chicken curry (chicken soaked in yellow curry that falls off the bone); goat curry (you’ll never have better goat); dumplings with chicken (stew with moist bread-like goodness); red beans and rice (cooked in coconut milk and green onions); jerk chicken (jerk is a style of cooking native to Jamaica in which meats are dry-rubbed with a very hot spice mixture called Jamaican jerk spice); and so much more. Negril is a foodie’s wonderland filled with bold, rich flavors that you’ll come back for time and time again.
