Nelson History
Nelson’s earliest inhabitants were the Maori, indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand. It is believed that they settled in the Nelson area about 1100 years ago and developed their own distinct culture. The arrival of Europeans introduced weaponry that resulted in the Maori waging tribal warfare and the introduction of disease that decimated their population. Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer was the first European to anchor in Golden Bay. However, he named the body of water Murderer’s Bay, as four of his sailors were killed by Maori attackers. The English, namely Captain James Cook, were the next Europeans to find their way to the Nelson region in the year 1770. The Frenchman Captain Dumont D’Urville visited Nelson in 1827. Frederick Moore, a Wellington, New Zealand settler explored the Nelson area in 1840 and 1841 for the New Zealand Company paving the way for settlement in 1842. Nelson was named in honor of Admiral Horatio Nelson who had defeated the Spanish and French fleets in the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson’s appeal for settlement was it having the best harbor but it soon became apparent that there was not enough arable land for the settlers to grow food for sustenance. This led to exploration of the Wairau area (now Marlborough), which caused controversy with the Maori and resulted in the death of twenty settlers. Nelson grew slowly with a brewery, flax mill, tannery, solar salt works, and woolen mill industries providing industry for the population. In 1853, Nelson was granted the status of city, New Zealand’s second city. Nelson College, a school for boys was founded in 1856 and the Nelson College for girls opened in 1883. Today the economy of Nelson is based on seafood, horticulture, tourism and forestry. Although ‘sunny’ Nelson is a great place for a holiday, the luxury hotel guest will appreciate the hard work of the early settlers and the beauty they created.
