New York City History

Long before the first European settlers arrived on the New York City seaboard, the Lenape tribe of Native Americans foraged, hunted and fished from seasonal campsites along the shoreline. Their peaceful existence was disturbed by the arrival of Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524, an Italian explorer representing the French monarchy. By the time Henry Hudson arrived in 1609, representing the Dutch West India Company, the Lenape felt a deep mistrust of outsiders. European settlers began arriving in 1624 to establish a trading post in what is now called Lower Manhattan and engaged in many bloody battles with the Natives. In 1626, Peter Minuit, the colony’s first governor, engaged in an unscrupulous real estate transaction when he purchased the 14,000 acres of New York City’s Manhattan borough for approximately $24.00 worth of glass beads. The English conquered the city in 1664 and renamed it New York. The population in New York grew and prospered under the British, although there was discontent over the burdensome taxes. This area became the United States national capital in 1783 after the Revolutionary War ended. Any luxury hotel visitor with a love for history will enjoy exploring New York City’s history in its standing monuments as well as in its many museums.

New York City Districts

New York City is made up of five boroughs, each of which could be a city in and of itself. Each borough has neighborhoods of various sizes with their own unique personalities. For more information on a particular borough or neighborhood, ask your luxury hotel concierge service. You can experience the different atmospheres and flavors of each district by walking through its streets, but be sure to remain alert and aware of your surroundings to avoid pick pocketing or other city crimes. The five boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island) each have a unique and distinct culture evident in the New Yorkers who live and play there. During your luxury hotel stay, be sure to explore each borough to discover the interesting array of attractions, events and venues. Consult with the concierge service at your luxury hotel to plan an exciting and personal itinerary during your stay in New York City.

Popular Museums of New York City

As a patron of an elite small luxury hotel, it would seem like you already have a taste for the finer things in life. A visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) would be a fantastic way to spend an artistic day in New York City. Not only are world-class masterpieces displayed in these fine museums, but the architecture of the buildings themselves is equally impressive. For a truly luxurious day, you can explore the city’s fine dining during lunchtime or return to your elegant hotel to experience their spa services. When you’re ready to continue your tour of New York City museums, consider the American Museum of Natural History where you’ll see incredible dinosaur skeleton displays, a live Butterfly Conservatory, and space shows in the adjoining Rose Center for Earth and Space. SoHo, an acronym derived from “south of Houston Street,” is the place for discerning travelers to find fascinating architecture, upscale shopping, and countless art galleries. Give your feet a rest and grab a window seat at a bar where you can enjoy your favorite drink while people-watching or day dreaming about what it would be like to actually live in New York City.

New York City Must-See Attractions

There are a handful of must-see attractions for the first-time visitor of the Big Apple. Be sure to hop on the ferry to get a closer look at the Statue of Liberty. If you’re interested in seeing the interior of this national monument, you’ll want to plan this trip in advance in order to purchase the necessary tickets to be granted admission. You can also ask your luxury hotel concierge service for assistance. If you’re visiting Lady Liberty in the hot days of summer, bring a bottle of water along on your excursion to help you stay comfortable during the long lines. You’ll also want to make room in your schedule to visit the Brooklyn Bridge, the Empire State Building, and Central Park. A leisurely visit to these locations on a bright sunny afternoon will show you firsthand why New Yorkers love their city. If you’re up for sensory overload, a visit to New York City’s Times Square after dark will do the trick. It’s flashing lights, honking horns, on-location TV broadcasts, street performers and large crowds can be found nowhere else in the world and are sure to take your breath away.

New York City Events & Shows

From sporting events, cultural festivals, and artistic displays to charitable functions, family-friendly parades, and pet events, you’ll find it all in New York City. Ask your luxury hotel concierge service about ongoing festivities and events during your stay. Broadway shows tend to be discounted on Mondays and Tuesdays, while Friday and Saturday nights are the more popular nights when you might encounter some difficulties in trying to make reservations. In general, booking your tickets online and well ahead of time will save you time, money, and a headache. If you’re not choosy about the show and you’re simply looking for the Broadway experience, then by all means, take advantage of same-day last-minute savings at the ticket booth.

New York City Shopping

If shopping is a passion of yours, New York City will fulfill your wildest dreams. Step out from your luxury hotel and be prepared to find the finest of American and international companies with flagship stores waiting for you to explore their exclusive merchandise. Make your way to Madison Avenue and weave through the couture houses for a first-hand look at the latest fashion. For a more intimate shopping experience, check out New York City’s abundance of trendy downtown boutiques where you’ll find high-quality clothing, jewelry, and accessories. Whatever type of shopping you’re seeking, you’ll find it and so much more in New York City. On the way back to your luxury hotel, you’ll surely be sharing the backseat of your New York City taxi with a plethora of shopping bags.

New York City Cuisine

New York’s ethnic diversity brings with it gastronomic diversity that will please even the most particular foodie. Whether you’re craving sweets and desserts, upscale dining, a great cup of coffee, fast food, or an incredible deli sandwich, you’ll find what you’re looking for in New York City. Here you will find restaurants preparing every style of cooking and regional cuisine imaginable in a price range to suit any budget. New York’s trendiest restaurants will require reservations, at times months in advance, so plan accordingly and be sure to ask your luxury hotel concierge service if you need assistance. For a taste of local favorites, ask around or check out websites with restaurant ratings. Be sure to give the Russian Tea Room and Zabar’s a try before you head back home. If you visit Central Park, bring a picnic along for a fun and relaxing dining experience.

Your escape to NYC is heightened by the elegant and sophisticated experience you will enjoy at a small luxury hotel. For an exciting and lively luxury getaway, take on all that New York City has to offer!
