Newport’s Congregation, Jeshuat Israel, is the second oldest Jewish congregation in the United States. Touro Synagogue, in Newport, is the oldest standing synagogue in the US. Many Quakers also settled in Newport in the 17th century. Benjamin Franklin’s brother, James, was printing in Newport and printed the first newspaper, the Rhode Island Gazette in 1732. In the middle of the 18th century, a second wave of Portuguese Jews, attracted by the ability to practice their religion openly and freely, brought with them capital, commercial experience and enterprise. They introduced the Newport population and engaged in whaling to the manufacture of sperm oil. Newport’s economic growth was underway.
