Newport History
Newport was founded in 1639 by a group of religious heretics who were expelled from Massachusetts. Newport would become the most important port in Rhode Island. In the year 1640, a public school was established. Newport’s religious tolerance resulted in a group of Jews settling here in 1658 as they fled the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal. Newport’s Congregation, Jeshuat Israel, is the second oldest Jewish congregation in the United States. Touro Synagogue, in Newport, is the oldest standing synagogue in the US. Many Quakers also settled in Newport in the 17th century. Benjamin Franklin’s brother, James, was printing in Newport and printed the first newspaper, the Rhode Island Gazette in 1732.
