William Penn sailed from Great Britain to the New World in 1682 and landed in November of that year near what is now Chester, south of Philadelphia. Naming his colony Pennsylvania after himself, Penn began planning the city that is present-day Philadelphia, the Greek word for “City of Brotherly Love.” Penn organized the city as a grid with numbered streets running north and south, and streets named for trees running east and west. As the city grew, so did resentment toward England’s tax policies. In 1776, representatives of the thirteen colonies met in Philadelphia at Independence Hall to sign the Declaration of Independence and declared freedom from Britain. Britain refused to give up control of the New World, and sent troops, the Redcoats, to fight the insurgents. The ensuing Revolutionary War lasted eight years, and in 1787 delegates from the thirteen colonies again met in Philadelphia, this time to create the United States Constitution, firmly establishing the country’s structure of government. Being centrally located within the thirteen colonies, Philadelphia was the nation’s capital from 1790-1800. Philadelphia now thrives as a historic luxury hotels destination, entertaining visitors with mouth-watering food, lovely luxury hotels, historic sites, and city-wide events and entertainment that are hardly rivaled elsewhere.
