St. Thomas History

World Class Resort Destination: St. Thomas

The Ciboney people originally settled St. Thomas in 1500 BC, native inhabitants thought to have originated in South America. The Ciboney, were followed by the Arawaks and Caribs, the natives Christopher Columbus encountered when he sighted St. Thomas on his second visit to the ‘New World’ in1493. The Caribs were subjected to disease, deportation or slaying during their first years of contact with Europeans and as a result, few of them survived. The Dutch West India Company established the first settlement in St. Thomas in 1657. In 1666, the Danish conquered St. Thomas and by 1672 had created plantations cultivating sugar cane. The plantations became dependent on slave labor in order to prosper and St. Thomas quickly became a large center for slave auctions. St. Thomas possessed a great natural harbor and it was soon designated a free port. As the production of sugar cane floundered due to weather, competition and the eventual abolishment of slavery, it was the port now called Charlotte Amalie that sustained St. Thomas economically. During the many years of Danish control of St. Thomas, Denmark remained neutral during the hundreds of years of European wars. St. Thomas served as a trading center for Dutch, English and French products produced in the Caribbean. By 1845, the St Thomas port of Charlotte Amalie had one hundred and one importing houses of various ethnic origins. St. Thomas, as well as St. Croix and St. John, were purchased from Denmark in 1917 by the United States to serve as a strategic defense over the Caribbean and Panama during World War I. These islands became known as the US Virgin Islands and in 1927 the residents of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John were granted US citizenship. Territorial status was granted in 1954, and by 1970 the islands achieved home rule with Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas serving as the capital. Post-war St. Thomas saw the rise of tourism to the island. With improved infrastructure, tourism has flourished and the luxury hotel visitor will delight in the beauty and serenity that St. Thomas has to offer. Please be advised that in St. Thomas the rule of the road is to drive on the left so keep this is mind if you decide to rent a vehicle.

St. Thomas Attractions

Gorgeous St. Thomas Castle

Perched atop of Government Hill is Blackbeard’s Castle, one of five National Historic Landmarks in the US Virgin Islands. Built by the Danes in 1679 in effort to protect the harbor in Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas, the mixture of history and legend will add to the luxury hotel guest’s stunning view, used as a vantage point against enemy ships. If you’re up for some exercise climb the St. Thomas staircase “street” or ninety-nine steps that lead to the Castle. Fort Christian, another St. Thomas National Historic Landmark, is the oldest standing structure and houses a museum where the luxury hotel visitor can view artifacts from when the Danes held power here. Other St. Thomas places of interest for the luxury hotel interested in history are the St. Thomas Reformed Church, St. Thomas Synagogue, and Seven Arches Museum.

St. Thomas Meygans Bay Beach

St. Thomas is considered a water lover’s paradise. Magen’s Bay Beach, located on the north side of St. Thomas, is a heart shaped stretch of beach considered by National Geographic to be one of the finest in the world. This public park is a great place to sun and swim. On your return to your luxury hotel suite, be sure to stop in at St Thomas Dairies for an island tradition of a milkshake with a dash of Cruzan rum. Coki Beach is the best place for the St. Thomas luxury hotel guest to snorkel or scuba dive. Although you can buy fish food, just a wave of your very hand causes the many beautiful fish to gather. St. Thomas’ Coral World Ocean Park is the place for the luxury hotel guest who plans on staying dry but truly experience marine life, birds and land animals. If you feel like getting wet, the Sea Lion Encounter will fascinate you. If you desire a break from the beach, the luxury hotel visitor can head to the volcanic peaks of St. Thomas and partake in a nature walk at the St. Peter Great House and Botanical Gardens. Not only is the view captivating, the hundreds of tree and plant species including twenty varieties of orchids make a welcomed change from sand. Fishing, golfing, sailing and kayaking are other activities to consider and your St. Thomas luxury hotel concierge will be a great reference source for equipment rentals and excursions.

St. Thomas Shopping

Scuba Dive At Coki Beach

If you’re a luxury hotel traveler who loves to ‘shop ‘til you drop’ then St. Thomas is definitely the place for you. St. Thomas is considered the shopping mecca in the Caribbean. The most booming shopping area is downtown Charlotte Amalie near the cruise ship docks. To avoid crowds and receive attentive service, try shopping early or late and on a day when fewer cruise ships are in harbor. Bargaining is considered appropriate in St. Thomas when the luxury hotel shopper enters an open-air bazaar. St. Thomas’ free port makes pricier items such as gems, jewelry, watches, cameras, perfumes, cosmetics and electronics affordable with no duties or added sales tax. Stores will gladly ship large and heavy items for a modest fee, rather than having to drag your treasures back with you to your St. Thomas luxury hotel suite. The best advice when buying expensive items is to know prior to your St. Thomas luxury hotel escape, what the Customs regulations of your country of origin are, so there won’t be any costly, unexpected surprises.
