Telluride History
Telluride’s rugged terrain prevented the Ute Native Americans from establishing any long term encampments. However, they were frequent summertime residents until the arrival of miners. With the first gold claim made in the year 1875, settlement of the Telluride area at the head of the San Miguel River followed thereafter. Telluride’s isolated location contributed to its slow development, although the mines were rich in zinc, copper, lead, silver and gold. In 1881, a toll road opened which allowed wagons into the area where only pack mules had previously tread. Before becoming famous, Butch Cassidy robbed the San Miguel Valley of Telluride of $24,580 in the year of 1889. With the arrival of the railroad in 1890, mining flourished as more ore could be removed. In 1891, a Telluride local named L. L. Nunn worked with Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse in building the first alternating current power plant and demonstrated that electricity could be successfully transmitted over long distances. Electricity could now be supplied to the mines. Until 1972, mining was Telluride’s only industry. When the first ski lift was installed at the Telluride Ski Resort, snow would become the new gold in Telluride. Mines in Telluride were consolidated and eventually phased out, dramatically changing the local population. As Telluride developed a service culture, the mining families fled in search of work in other mining communities. Telluride had entered its ‘hippie’ phase. In 1978, new investment in the ski resort brought expansion of its infrastructure and a new gondola connecting Telluride with Mountain Village.
