Viti Levu History

Viti Levu is believed to have been inhabited longer than any of the other islands comprising Fiji. According to oral historians, the first settlers landed at Vuda Point some 3500 years ago. Based on linguistics, it is surmised that they arrived from Vanuatu or the Solomon Islands. Geologists believe that Viti Levu has been submerged a number of times as well as covered by lava and other volcanic material. The rugged terrain of Viti Levu was created by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Archeologists studying remains found on Viti Levu, believe there were two periods of pre- historic immigration caused by volcanic activity on neighboring islands. To this day, human remains and pottery shards are being excavated on the western coast lending further evidence to the theory. Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman, was the first European to come ashore on Viti Levu. Captain James Cook also landed on Viti Levu in the year 1774, but the unfriendly natives practicing cannibalism discouraged a lengthy stay. The first recorded discovery of Viti Levu was made by Captain William Bligh after a mutiny in 1789 on his ship, the Bounty. Although the luxury hotel visitor may enjoy diving on the coral reefs around Viti Levu, they were treacherous for 19th century mariners. Shipwrecked sailors and runaway convicts from Australia’s penal colonies were quite, by accident, the first Europeans to live amongst the Fiji natives. Missionaries and sandalwood traders would soon follow. Fiji was ceded to Britain in 18 74.Sugar plantations developed as the primary source of industry. Between 1879 and 1916, indentured laborers from India were brought to work the fields. When the indentured system was abolished, many of the laborers stayed on to become independent farmers and businessmen. Fiji gained its independence in 1970 and much of native Fijian life has been preserved. Today the Viti Levu city of Suva serves as the capital of Fiji, a multi racial and multi-cultural nation living in harmony ready to share their ways with interested luxury hotel visitors.
