Cottage

The Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort presides over a 10,000-acre pastoral setting on California's Central Coast. Year-round beauty envelops the 1946-built retreat, whose clusters of one-story cottages sprawl comfortably in the Santa Ynez Valley. The views of the surrounding countryside may be the reason why so many families have made vacations here part of their traditions.

Relaxation and comfort, complemented by attentive service, are high priorities at this resort. Each room boasts a wood-burning fireplace, which guests seem to prefer to television. (TV can be enjoyed in the public rooms when desired.) Two championship 18-hole golf courses will tempt the family duffers, while swimming and other water activities on the Ranch's 96-acre spring-fed lake, tennis, and superb horseback riding over the many trails of this working cattle ranch will keep everyone else busy. Touring the valley is a real treat, too. The town of Solvang is nearby (where fully two thirds of the population is of Danish descent), as well as scenic parks, horse ranches, and wineries.

Business conference facilities are generous, with an array of audio-visual equipment and an accommodating staff in attendance. There are also staff members dedicated to entertaining the children in tow, with day camps classified according to the participants' ages.

Red hues highlight the Ranch Room Restaurant, artfully appointed with western antiques and colorful country quilts adjacent to the spacious picture windows. The fireplace crackles invitingly while you select a dinner entree by Chef Pascal Gode from the menu, which changes daily. One of tonight's choices may be Fresh Dungeness Crab Cakes with Creole Sauce or Grilled Colorado Lamb Chops with Herbs de Provence and Balsamic Glaze. A featured dessert might be Tulip of Chocolate Mousse with White Chocolate Shavings. Enjoy after-dinner relaxation, conviviality, music and dancing in the Oak Room.
