The Resort received designation to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, during its 70th Anniversary year. If our hotel walls could talk, we would hear some wonderful stories of our treasured past. The property opened in 1935 as a private dance club. On two separate occasions, fire attributed to arson burned most of the structure. After adding 110 guest rooms, the King and Prince Hotel opened for the 1941 summer season and quickly established its reputation of elegance and hospitality. Within months of opening, German U-boats were spotted off the coast of the resort and the hotel closed to the public for the duration of WWII, but served our nation as a Naval training facility and radar station. Through the 1950's, 60's and 70's, daily pullman service was offered to Atlanta on Southern Railways and Eastern Air Lines flew from Miami and New York to St. Simons Island, allowing the resort and St. Simons Island to become a popular seaside vacation retreat.
