Opened in 1902, The Mount Washington Hotel & Resort continues as one of the last of the great Grand Hotels in the beautiful White Mountains, 18,000 acres of National Forest at the base of the Presidential Range. A white-columned, 900-foot-long veranda decorated with geraniums and white wicker furniture wraps around most of the huge building, offering a peaceful place from which to contemplate the beauty of the surrounding countryside.
The main lobby area is elegantly decorated in creams, rich reds, blues and rose, with coordinating couches and easy chairs providing many cozy niches to sit in and read or people-watch. Sparkling chandeliers, wall-length windows and a large fireplace enhance the room's splendor.
Guestrooms are done in light pastels and floral wallpaper accents, with coordinating bedding and drapes, couch and/or easy chairs in deep tones, brass fixtures and floor lamps. Two large windows provide magnificent mountain views. Most bathrooms contain antique claw-foot tubs with showers, large antique marble sinks and brass fixtures.
The Grand Main Dining Room is designed in a unique octagonal fashion, with crystal chandeliers and stained-glass accents. Large wall-length windows allow for sweeping views. The menu changes daily and dinner is accompanied by the resort orchestra, which plays everything from contemporary jazz to traditional orchestral arrangements.
The hotel provides an ample array of amenities, among which is a supervised resort activities program for children, geared for ages 5-12. A crew experienced in structured children's programs staffs the King of the Mountain Kids Kamp. For grown-ups, there are five major ski areas, just half an hour away, in addition to full resort amenities. |
