Built in 1884, the Deerfield Inn is the quintessential New England hostelry, situated in historic Deerfield on what has been called "the loveliest street in New England." Deerfield was settled around 1670 and was recognized for its unspoiled antiquity as early as 1819. There are now 14 museum houses to explore, along with the cultural history, art and craftsmanship of the Pioneer Valley. Many art galleries, museums, bookstores and antique shops are close by.
The Deerfield Inn has been carefully modernized to maintain its New England atmosphere--and not disturb the Inn's two celebrated ghosts, Cora and Hershel. Guestrooms feature antiques and period reproductions, designer fabrics and wall coverings, and tile bathrooms. Each guest enjoys individual climate control, telephone and television.
All guests partake of a full country breakfast plus afternoon tea and "nibbles." The Deerfield Inn Dining Room, with its Queen Anne chairs, mahogany tables and white napery is a step back into New England history. Period sideboards, brass chandeliers and portrait-lined walls provide a sense of the past. A not-to-be-missed entree is the sashimi-quality tuna cooked rare with leeks, wrapped in a scaloppini of veal, then sautéed and served with a light marsala tomato sauce. For dessert, a favorite is the Deerfield Inn Indian Pudding. Guests may choose from an abundant selection of wines and local ales.
