The White Barn Inn is situated between woodlands and the rugged shoreline of Maine, and is one of a number of historic farmhouses in the northern New England area that have been restored and converted into lodgings.
The hardwood floors of the original structure built in 1840 are still in place throughout the Inn today, complementing the 19th-century antiques in the lobby. During the last three years, all of the bedrooms at the White Barn have been completely refurbished; most recently (2002) our 6 Junior Suites have been extensively renovated. The suites, known by name, red, blue, aubergine, now boast expansive baths with black granite floors, white marble walls and seamless glass enclosed shower. The elegant vanity is made of Carrera marble and is further enhanced with faucetry by Lefroy and Brooks of England. Every suite is complete with King sized feather beds with down comforters and oversized upholstered headboards. Comfortably furnished with large down seating armchairs and leather ottomans, each new Junio Suite is fitted with a woodburning fireplace.
The restaurant can be found in a carefully restored three-story barn with large picture windows. Guests dine by candlelight, entertained by a pianist as they enjoy their choices from a menu that lives up to the elegant surroundings and wine selections from a freshly (and vastly) expanded wine cellar. Dinner might begin with Foie Gras. The entree of choice is (what else?) a steamed Maine Lobster on fresh fettuccine, with carrots and ginger in a cognac and coral butter sauce. For dessert there is rich chocolate mousse served in a thin pastry crust, garnished with toasted hazelnuts and Frangelico-flavored whipped cream. In addition to the extensive wine list, a variety of liqueurs, ports and cognacs are offered.
Also recently renovated is the Breakfast Room, elegant and refined with granite topped tables and leather setting, now a peaceful refuge for Breakfast or Afternoon Tea. Complimentary afternoon tea with fresh patisseries is served daily to hotel guests. Outdoor activities available nearby include riding one of the Inn's bicycles along a stunning stretch of coastline, sailing, deep-sea fishing, ocean swimming, whale watching, monastery tours, or a five-minute walk to the heart of Kennebunkport with its antique shops, theater and galleries.
The White Barn Inn was named one of the most romantic hideaways for 1996 by The Discerning Traveler, and the restaurant has held the prestigious AAA Five-Diamond rating for five consecutive years. |
