Your Own Private Island Awaits You...® Virtually untouched for centuries, Little St. Simons Island is a privately owned, 10,000-acre barrier island along the Georgia coast. The owners have welcomed family and friends since the early 1900s. Accessible only by boat and allowing just 30 overnight guests, the Lodge provides comfort in a natural setting highlighted by a seven-mile stretch of pristine beach.
The classic Hunting Lodge, built in 1917, is the very heart of Island life. Reminiscent of a Hemingway novel, its great room is the gathering spot for each evening's social hour. An informal bar is available, and delicious regional cuisine utilizing the bounty of the area is served family-style in the Hunting Lodge dining room. This is the perfect setting to enjoy delicious regional specialties such as oyster roasts, blue crabs, crispy fried flounder and homemade ice cream and sorbets.
Among the five lodges and cottages, the elegant Helen House is a favorite. This historic house was constructed in 1928 of tabby, a building material made from indigenous materials that was used extensively in coastal Georgia during colonial times. Situated along the creek and shaded by a small grove of live oaks bedecked with Spanish moss, the Helen House offers three gracious bedrooms, one with fireplace, two baths, a large living room with a grand fireplace, and a screened porch which overlooks a quiet courtyard and the expansive marsh beyond. The home provides ideal accommodations for families and groups of friends as well as individual travelers.

The Island is a haven for wildlife. The diversity of habitats provides an exciting opportunity for bird watching with over 280 species recorded on the Island, as well as viewing European fallow deer, alligators, dolphin and the many other creatures that share the Island and its waters. It would be tempting to become part of the wildlife, except for the very civilized care and service of the staff on Little St. Simons Island.
It may take a while to explore all seven miles of beaches, as well as the inland waterways and woods, so feel free to stay awhile. You'll be glad you did. |
