John Rutledge was one of 55 men who signed the Constitution of the United States. His home, which he built in 1763 as a wedding gift to his wife, is one of only 15 belonging to those signatories that have survived, and the only one that is now a boutique hotel accommodating lodging guests.
The Inn is a complex of three buildings--the main house and two carriage houses--that enclose a courtyard garden of plants indigenous to coastal South Carolina. There are tables in the courtyard for guests who wish to eat their breakfast outdoors.
All rooms have parquet floors, Italian marble fireplaces, 14-foot ceilings with equally tall classic window treatments, and crystal chandeliers. The second-floor ballroom is a public area where the Colonial experience is recreated for the edification of guests. Wine and sherry are offered.
Guestrooms are decorated with accurate period reproduction furniture and some antiques, individual climate control, remote-control color TV and refrigerators. Suites feature parlors, fireplaces in the bedrooms, and have double whirlpools and a separate shower.
There is no full service restaurant at the Inn, but afternoon tea and refreshments are served daily.
The Inn specializes in small, upscale meetings and offers a full range of meeting and catering services. Wild Dunes and Kiawah, two nearby golf resorts, extend privileges to our guests.
The Inn is located in the heart of Charleston's historical district, directly across from the famous antebellum mansions. Fine restaurants, theaters, shopping, Charleston Place and the Market are within a few minutes' walking distance. |
