Built in 1889 as the private residence of U.S. Congressman and Ambassador Richard Pearson, Richmond Hill was a center of North Carolina social, literary and political activity for many years. Each of the twelve lovingly restored guestrooms is named after a family member or prominent literary figure of the Asheville area, and furnished with Queen Anne Style antiques and four-poster and canopy beds. Many rooms have fireplaces.
Guests may also stay in one of 5 Victorian-style "croquet cottages" surrounding their own croquet court, or the Garden Pavilion, overlooking the Parterre Garden with its geometrically designed flower beds, mountain brook and serene waterfall.
In the Oak Hall, guests can bask in front of a roaring fire that reflects warmly the walls entirely paneled in polished oak. Or they can peruse the extensive collection of books on Western North Carolina, as well as a selection of Richard Pearson's own first editions, in the Library. The grand octagonal ballroom is an ideal site for meetings, receptions and banquets.
It would be a mistake to miss dinner at Gabrielle's, where nationally acclaimed continental cuisine is served in the mansion's cherry-paneled dining room. Recent seasonal house specials included Gabrielle's signature mountain apple and Vidalia onion soup, gratinée with aged Gruyere, and grilled spicy pink shrimp with peach glaze, fresh peach slaw, and potato-leek pancake.
Surrounded by the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Richmond Hill Inn is just minutes from downtown Asheville with its theater, art and antique shopping. Golf, skiing, the Biltmore Estate and the Blue Ridge Parkway are also just a short drive away. |
