Renamed for the celebrated American poet, who vacationed here in the 1850s and "made his acquaintance with the sea," the fully restored Emerson combines modern comfort with the unspoiled atmosphere of an earlier, more gracious era. Here the fast pace of modern life yields to tranquil days filled with sun and sea, leisurely strolls along quiet tree-shaded streets, and visits to art galleries and shops. There are party boats for fishing, sightseeing or whale watching. Nearby are golf, tennis and an excellent summer theater. Or guests can simply stroll the spacious grounds or loaf in a comfortable chair on the wide, old-fashioned veranda overlooking the sea.
Emerson would still feel at home in the Greek Revival-style inn's guestrooms with their spool beds and old-fashioned dressers. Modern guests also enjoy telephones, dataports, cable TV and private baths. Tones of coast light yellow and navy blue dominate the decor of the intimate dining room and spacious living room.
