The Battery Carriage House Inn is "No. 20 on the Battery," built in 1843, and the childhood summer home of the owner's grandmother. Beyond the wrought iron gates lies beautiful White Point Gardens in Charleston's Historic Residential District at the quiet end of the Battery overlooking Charleston Harbor.
The atmosphere is European, garden-centered, history-laden, romantic and intimate. Eight guestrooms are located in the old carriage house in the garden of the antebellum mansion, and another three rooms are on the ground floor in what was once the kitchen area of the mansion. Each room has a private entrance and each is individually decorated. The most unusual room is a small suite, which was the old cistern of the house! This extremely private lodging has its own sitting area under the porch. Of course, all conveniences are provided, including private steam bath shower units in some rooms, whirlpool tubs in others, staff to assist you with reservations and tours, and a private phone line with answering machine in each room.
Guests begin their day with the deluxe continental breakfast served with the morning newspaper, either in-room or under the Lady Bankshire rose arbor. For dinner, it's just a 10- to 15-minute walk up High Battery to Charleston's celebrated selection of fine restaurants.
This is definitely the right spot for a gracious, relaxing, European-style getaway south of the Mason-Dixon Line.
