Nestled in the foothills of New Mexico's Sangre de Cristos is Santa Fe's most charming ranch resort, The Bishop's Lodge Resort and Spa. Once the private retreat of a frontier cleric (the subject of Willa Cather's novel, Death Comes for the Archbishop), the Lodge is centered around Bishop Lamy's original gardens, hillside home and chapel. The resort was founded by the Jim Thorpe family in 1918, and has been welcoming guests with its "hand-crafted hospitality" for over 76 years. Today, this intimate ranch covers nearly 1,000 acres of landscaped facilities and natural pinyon-juniper forests, providing a peaceful "get away from it all" experience that is still just five minutes from the bustling heart of Old Santa Fe.
Guest accommodations range from cozy standard doubles to large deluxe rooms and suites with kiva fireplaces and private patios. Plush bathrobes, daily newspapers and nightly turndown service are among the many services provided. A thousand acres of seasonal amenities included riding stables, tennis courts, skeet range, nature trails and the prettiest pool in New Mexico. Summer offerings include a special program for guests aged four to twelve, and weekly trailride breakfasts.
The restaurant features contemporary cuisine in a historic setting amid Santa Fe decor: beamed ceilings, Navaho rugs, Mexican chandeliers, and four life-size W.E. Rollins murals commissioned in the '20s. A recent dinner consisted of an appetizer of crab cakes with black bean puree, field greens with balsamic vinaigrette, ranch raised elk noisette with jalapeno corn cakes, and an almond tuille berry basket with creme anglaise. For cocktails there's El Rincon, a delightful "corner bar" opening onto the Firelight Terrace with views of sunsets and stars. In winter, a roaring fire in the lobby is the spot to try "The Bishop's Brandy & Cider."
"City close with country charm," the Lodge is now open the year 'round and is the perfect choice for experiencing all the delightful seasons of Santa Fe. |
