The Pierre is the dream-come-true of the legendary French chef, Charles Pierre Casalasco. This European-style luxury hotel on New York's Fifth Avenue opened in 1930, and was immediately hailed as "a monument of beauty and one of the most majestic structures in all New York." Overlooking Central Park, the imposing Georgian structure capped by a gleaming copper tower was inspired by a French chateau.
Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts have managed the Pierre since 1981. The hotel has recently completed a $70-million-dollar renovation, including all guestrooms and suites, guest corridors, lobby and function space. A state-of-the-art fitness center has been added to the list of complimentary guest services.
Each of the rooms is individually and exquisitely furnished. Such services as manned elevators, twice-daily maid service, valet, and hand laundry, rare in today's world, are regular features here. Special preferences of guests are noted by the staff and remembered on return visits. The multilingual concierge can accomplish feats that range from chartering a private plane to procuring gourmet delicacies not listed on the day's menu.
The hotel's highly acclaimed Cafe Pierre has been touted as one of the city's top restaurants with its innovative menu that features modern interpretations of classical French cuisine by Chef Julian Bompard. Fricassee of Wild Mushrooms, Asparagus and Ricotta Gnocchi, and Three Preparations of Salmon with Caviar Creme Fraiche are among the starters. Main course selections include Black Bass Filet served in an Artichoke Broth and Roast Baby Chicken with Sautéed Cepes, Green Beans and Fingerling Potatoes. An array of tempting desserts, such as Warm Honey and Cinnamon Tart with Chilled Poached Pears, adds to the menu's appeal.
This is a fine example of a classic hotel thoughtfully and delightfully updated to become a landmark 20th-century hostelry. |
