Located in the medieval walled city of Old San Juan, the Hotel El Convento is a former Carmelite Convent dating to 1651. The Convent site is a National Historic Landmark. In 1995, the new owners restored the hotel to its original beauty with Spanish features of the original Convent.
The hotel, which occupies the top 3 floors, has a private entrance in the original magnificent courtyard where a 300-year-old nispero fruit tree from Spain still stands. The courtyard has a heated swimming pool and whirlpool. The first 2 floors feature restaurants, cafes, shops and galleries.
The large rooms and suites are individually decorated with Andalusian tile floors, mahogany beams, throw rugs and Spanish furniture. Each room has a vista of Old San Juan and its bay.
For hotel guests, the El Convento serves a complimentary "eye-opener" breakfast of juice, coffee and pastry along with the morning paper to your room or on the outdoor terrace. There is a bar where complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres are served each evening, and there are 3 restaurants. Cafe Del Nispero features light bistro fare in the interior courtyard. El Picoteo serves exceptional Spanish tapas for lunch and dinner. Cafe Bohemio specializes in creative Puerto Rican cuisine for lunch and dinner.
In the very heart of old San Juan, the hotel is a short taxi ride from the airport and the several business areas. Should you desire, day trips can be arranged to most out-island destinations. |
