This hotel, in a meticulously restored 1918 Tudor building just five blocks from the White House, is characterized by its very British ambiance. The name derives from Henley-on-Thames, a quaint old English town famous for its annual rowing regatta. British heritage is reflected not only in dignified, attentive service but also in the nomenclature throughout: The Blue Bar, the Wilkes Room, the Eton Room.
Over a hundred genuine gargoyles loom from the building's exterior. Inside, traditional English furnishings and fresh floral arrangements grace the lobby with its original Mercer tile floors. Elevators are lined with tapestries.
The classic decor in the guest rooms feature mahogany furniture, chintz upholstery in pastel tones and floral print comforters and draperies. Each room has bedside and bathroom telephones and a mini-bar. One of the hotel's distinctive suites, The Ambassador, with its formal dining room, octagonal living room, wet bar, and sumptuous furnishings, is modeled after one of the British Embassy's grandest bedrooms.
The Coeur de Lion serves fine continental cuisine with regional and seasonal inspirations. Exposed, weathered brick and a glass atrium enclose one area of the restaurant. An elegant candlelight dinner might begin with a Grilled Portobello Mushroom with Basil Puree. The entree list highlights a Trio of Lamb Chops with Balsamic Tomato Relish and Pecan Crusted Grouper with Butternut Squash Coulis and Chive Angel Hair. The meal may be finished off with Apricot Currant Bread Pudding with Warm White Chocolate Sauce.
Afternoon tea, served daily from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Wilkes Room, includes Earl Grey tea with Finger Sandwiches, Scones, and Devonshire Cream.
The Henley Park is only minutes away from all of Washington's major attractions and is a member of Historic Hotels of America. |
