In 1918, Walter J. Kohler commissioned the American Club to be built as housing for the immigrant workers he employed in the Kohler Co. factory. At its dedication, Walter Kohler expressed his belief that workers should be given "roses as well as wages." His dedication to the Kohler Co. workers was unique in a time when workers at most factories were given little respect. To demonstrate his concern, he designed The American Club to be the finest in habitat for the Kohler Co. workers.
In 1978, new life was breathed into this historic edifice. Cultural values and the heritage of the past were married with modern conveniences to evolve to an epitome of hospitality and a home for gracious living. Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, The American Club is the only AAA five-diamond resort hotel in the Midwest.
Each guestroom is appointed with fine furnishings, handcrafted woodwork, and a Kohler whirlpool bath. Some rooms feature spas enclosed in private greenhouses, oversized whirlpool baths, or remarkable Kohler Habitats. These environmental enclosures offer sun, steam, and rain. One- and two-story suites offer separate living rooms with fireplaces, dining areas, wet bars and powder rooms.
Golf enthusiasts will find Pete Dye's Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits Golf Courses to be spectacularly challenging with 72 holes of golf. Sports Core offers complete racquet, exercise and spa facilities.
The Kohler Design Center features 27 designer kitchens and bathrooms as well as a Kohler Museum. River Wildlife, a 500-acrewilderness preserve, offers hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing and cross-country skiing. Nearby shops at Woodlake offer a full array of specialty shops and a unique home-furnishing center. |
