"The new hotel is a graceful structure in the colonial style, simple yet elegant and appointed after the luxurious fashion of a gentleman's country house." So reported The Berkshire Courier in an April 1897 article about The Red Lion's reconstruction following a devastating fire that burned the original structure to the ground. Built in c.1773 as a stop between Boston and Albany, the Inn was a meeting place for dissident colonists and later hosted at least five presidents of the United States.
The white Victorian clapboard structure's magnificent porch full of white wicker is the perfect spot for watching the comings and goings of this lovely Berkshire Hills town, which its late resident Norman Rockwell loved to sketch. To step inside is to enter a world of memorabilia, much of which was saved from the original inn. Public areas feature displays of antiques, beautiful flowers, colonial pewter, Canton china, and photographs of Old Stockbridge. The guest rooms are comfortably furnished with period pieces and cozy comforters, many featuring gas-lit fireplaces. Each has a unique color scheme, delicate wallpapers, and Oriental rugs.
As the recipient of the Wine Spectator Award for the eighth consecutive year, the Inn offers a remarkable selection of fine wines to be enjoyed with the delicious contemporary New England cuisine with ingredients sourced from local farms served in the elegant main dining room. More casual fare can be had at Widow Bingham's Tavern. Within walking distance of the Inn are the Norman Rockwell Museum, antique shops, boutiques, and Mission House, a museum of early colonial life.
Whether you visit this picturesque village as spring unfolds, in summer to enjoy the Tanglewood Music Center, in colorful fall when foliage beckons, or to ski at a nearby mountain in winter, you'll enjoy one of New England's best-loved hostelries. |
