In the Vieux Carre, New Orleans' oldest section, just off Bourbon Street and two blocks from the site where the city began, the Hotel Maison de Ville is alive with history. The 1742 European style building was originally the private townhouse of an early pharmacist fondly remembered in local legend as the inventor of the cocktail. James Audubon painted the naturalist bird pictures for which he is famous while living in one of the hotel's nearby cottages. Tennessee Williams created "A Streetcar Named Desire" in the courtyard.

The main house is furnished with antiques, period paintings and old brass fittings. The intimate living room features a fireplace with marble mantel over which hangs an ornate gilded mirror. In the rear area of the hotel, garconnieres or slave quarters dating to the 1700s have been transformed into comfortable casually elegant guestrooms with four-poster beds and marble basins, facing a landscaped courtyard with fountains. The Audubon Cottages are seven carefully restored small houses clustered behind a stucco wall, each with its own courtyard, all surrounding a swimming pool.

The Bistro is romantically Parisian with its red leather banquettes, bevelled mirrors, Impressionist-style paintings and natural wood floors. Lunch and dinner offer fine New Orleans cuisine such as an appetizer of grilled shrimp with coriander sauce followed by sauteed Gulf fish with artichoke hearts, sun dried tomatoes and thyme. Dessert is a rich gingerbread with whipped cream. While the hotel has no bar - and, so close to Bourbon Street, needs none - the restaurant has an excellent wine list.

You can walk from the hotel to everything in the French Quarter: the docks where paddlewheel boats board, the French Market and some of the world's finest restaurants. Preservation Hall, the home of Dixieland, is just a block away. But the most memorable part of a visit to this unique historic district may well be your stay at the Hotel Maison de Ville.
