Built in 1986, the Hotel Carter is modeled after Eureka's Old Town Cairo Hotel. The Carter House is a renovated 1880s Victorian residence. The lobby of the brand-new Victorian Hotel Carter features unshaded windows, ceramic urns, oriental rugs, and antique pine furniture imported from England.
Each afternoon, guests enjoy complimentary wine and appetizers before a crackling fire in the lobby's marble fireplace.
Rooms are decorated in a cocoa brown and ivory color scheme with bleached pine antiques. Original contemporary artwork and fresh flowers add a tasteful touch. The queen-size beds with comforters and overstuffed lounge chairs are reminiscent of a Victorian bed and breakfast, but these accommodations have all the modern conveniences: desks, telephones, clock-radios, and cable TV in the armoires. Spacious modern bathrooms are done in black and white tile. Many have whirlpool baths.
The Hotel Carter is located at the gateway to Eureka's Old Town, with its charming brick-and flower-lined streets, art galleries, antique shops, and boutiques. It is also only two blocks from Humboldt Bay and the Marina. Before sitting out in the morning to explore, be sure to savor the homemade muffins and tarts offered with the complimentary continental breakfast.
At the Hotel Carter's Restaurant 301, tables are formal, with white linens, fresh flowers, and crystal candlestick holders. Live music enhances the romantic ambiance and a large selection of fine regional wines if available. A typical five-course dinner might begin with cabbage leaf stuffed with smoked salmon and cream cheese, followed by homemade soup and a refreshing sorbet. The entree might be rock Cornish game hen with sage sauce, or seasonal fresh fish. All are served with fresh vegetables and sprigs of herbs and edible flowers, many grown in the hotel's own gardens. For the finale, try one of the Hotel Carter's award-winning desserts.
Stay and explore the natural surroundings and history of Northern California. |
