In 1927 the Ocean View Hotel, then the only hotel on Monterey Bay, opened as an ornate and opulent contender for the San Francisco carriage trade. In later years, as the area's fishing and canning industry flourished, the grand hotel deteriorated to a shadow of its former splendor. The once exclusive Ocean View Avenue was renamed "Cannery Row," the setting for John Steinbeck's novel of the same name. As the fishing industry declined in the 1970s and the last operating cannery was converted into an aquarium, Cannery Row underwent major restoration and redevelopment as an historic district.
In 1985 the original Ocean View Hotel reopened its doors after renovation as an intimate 42-room luxury hotel surpassing even its own past glory. The hotel was given a new name--the Spindrift Inn.
The hotel is located directly on the beach, in the heart of Cannery Row and only two blocks from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The lobby is a four-story atrium focusing on a fireplace flanked by large candelabras. A 20- x 30-foot sculpture in 22-karat gold leaf is mounted above the lobby on the atrium wall.
Each romantic guestroom features a wood-burning fireplace, down comforters and pillows, draped or canopied feather beds, oriental carpets over hardwood floors, and built-in armoires. Half of the rooms feature spectacular ocean views. Baths are done in marble with brass fixtures and handcrafted tile floors. Afternoon tea, wine and cheese are served daily in the lobby. Silver tray continental breakfast is delivered each morning to your room. Room service is available.
The Spindrift Inn made history when it became the first hotel ever to win two first-place awards for excellence in the same year at the prestigious Gold Key Awards co-sponsored by the American Hotel and Motel Association and The Designer West Magazine. The Spindrift Inn won for Best Guestroom and Best Hotel Lobby/Reception Area. |
