New England has no country inn more traditional than The Griswold, known as "The Gris." Its main building, the first three-story frame structure in Connecticut, has been in continuous operation as a hostelry since its construction in 1776. The inn has been under the direction of only six families.

Guestrooms have colonial decor and many of the wooden floors slant with the settling of time. There are no televisions or radios, only piped classical music. Each accommodation does, however, offer such modern amenities as private baths, telephones, and climate control.

A complimentary continental breakfast is served daily in the Steamboat Room, one of five dining rooms. The Covered Bridge is an abandoned bridge moved from New Hampshire and is now famous for its important collection of Currier and Ives steamboat prints. The Gun Room houses a library of firearms dating back to the 15th century. The Library is a book-lined dining room with a crackling fireplace. Contemporary American fare, including marvelous fresh seafood, is served in these rooms. The Sunday Hunt Breakfast is a tradition started by the British when they occupied the inn in the War of 1812.

Today's yachtsmen on Long Island Sound often drop in at the Tap Room, built in 1738 as a schoolhouse, and later moved to its present location by a team of oxen. Visitors sit around the Tap Room's pot-bellied stove and enjoy nightly musical entertainment such as piano, banjo, sea chanteys, Dixieland or jazz.

Three 18th-century houses are also part of The Griswold Inn. The John Hayden House is ideal for small business groups, family gatherings, and special reunions.
