Built in 1914, the Colony Hotel is an historic grand resort serving generations of guests from May through October. With majestic ocean front views and Colonial Revival architecture, this landmark establishment guides working and pleasure boats up into the mouth of the Kennebunk River. The Colony Hotel is Maine's first environmentally responsible hotel, certified and designated as a "U.S. Backyard Wildlife Habitat". The Colony Hotel is a member of the Historic Hotels of America (National Trust for Historic Preservation)and Maine Businesses for Social Responsibility.
The 124 smoke-free guestrooms are in three buildings with either garden or ocean views. The typical guestroom is "like your grandmother's summer house" with Waverly floral wallpapers, hardwood floor, antique hooked rugs, antique furniture, and mostly king-sized beds. Each bath contains antique sinks, low-flow toilets and massage showers. There is no television in the guestrooms in the Main Hotel, but there is a television room on the first floor for viewing. In other buildings there are color cable TVs in the rooms. There is no need for air-conditioning as the architecture has been designed to capture the sea breezes through the windows.
The Colony Hotel Dining Room is open to the public and features award-winning New England fare including lobster, the freshest seafood, local produce and sumptuous homemade desserts. Homemade breakfasts are served daily and the Ocean Terrace Lounge serves lunch poolside in July and August. The Marine Room Lounge offers drinks and is open daily. Complimentary refreshments are a Colony Hotel tradition serving afternoon tea daily with home-baked sweets.
During summer months, the hotel offers naturalist programs on coastal marine ecology as well as social programs including the history of lobstering, marine art and architecture, movies and bingo. There are also outdoor activities such as putting, shuffleboard, horseshoes, croquet, bicycle rentals and volleyball. Guest may linger in the heated saltwater swimming pool, overlooking the ocean, or play in the surf of a private sandy beach. Guests are also extended privileges to the Cape Arundel Country Club for golf, and the River Club for tennis.
