Views of the Jemez Mountains, the Ojo Caliente River Valley, the magnificent rock formations of Georgia O'Keeffe country, and the mingling of cultures are among the charms of Rancho de San Juan's 225 scenic acres, where guests are greeted by gracious hospitality and quiet beauty. Created in the Hispanic tradition, the Hacienda embraces a courtyard filled with flowers, trees, sculpture and the sounds of a trickling fountain.
The main building, restaurant and public rooms have been designed for comfort and relaxation, highlighted by the owners' private collections of art and antiques. Patios and portals encourage quiet contemplation of the scenic beauty of Northern New Mexico. Rooms feature such southwestern touches as saltillo tile floors, beamed ceilings, terra cotta colors, and kiva fireplaces, as well as antique southwestern and European furniture.
Before dinner, guests gather for cocktails on the sunset terrace or in the comfortable living room and Kachina Bar, enlivened by a desert sunset or a blazing winter fire. The prix fixe dinner blends with creative sophistication the influence of Europe and the Americas. Zagat rated them #1 Restaurant in New Mexico in 2001, rated Mobil 4 Star (4 consecutive years) and they were the winner of Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence. You might start with a chipotle and tomato bisque, followed by medallions of venison with sundried cherry and red wine reduction, and for dessert, seasonal fresh fruit tarts.
A unique feature of Rancho de San Juan is the "Windows in the Earth" sculpture, created by Ra Paulette using simple hand tools. It is a cathedral-like chamber of soaring vaulted ceilings and massive columns meant to be viewed from within. Here guests can relax, meditate and absorb the regenerative powers of the desert's edge. |
