An Orvis endorsed fly fishing lodge, the indescribably beautiful Wit's End Guest Ranch Resort and Spa, located in the Vallecito Valley in southwestern Colorado near Durango, has a unique and colorful history dating back to 1859. The ranch's centerpiece is a magnificent 133-year-old, three-story, fully restored barn that has been turned into a wonderful dining, dancing and social center. Split logs, heavy beams, a massive river stone fireplace and cut glass mirrors from the 1836 Crystal Palace in London define the interior.
Surrounding the lodge and in select locations on the Vallecito River or the Lake are a variety of unique guest cabins ranging from one to four bedrooms. All boast knotty pine paneling, stone fireplaces, queen-size beds, fully equipped kitchens and superb Country French and willow porch furnishings and handmade log swings.
Horses owned by the Ranch are offered for horseback riding instruction and trail rides through the adjacent 2 million acre and 575,000-acre Weminuche wilderness area, where no modern-day equipment or motor vehicles are permitted. Customized pack trips are also organized by the Ranch for guests interested in fishing, photography, gold panning, backpacking and hiking, drop camps, and luxury pack trips.
The kids go off with individual group counselors and have their day filled with planned activities.
After breakfast in the lodge or on the deck, guests have the option to participate in the various planned activities, fly fish in 3 lakes or 7 different streams, enjoy a relaxing spa treatment, play tennis, go for a swim, or to just relax and enjoy the marvelous scenery from a cabin deck. Lunch is served in the lodge to those who stay on the premises. Evening dining takes place in the Old Lodge at the Lake Restaurant with a separate children's dining area. Candlelight dining selections please even the most discriminating guests and a "kids'" menu is offered.
Ranch cookouts, hayrides, and outside dining around the fire round off a great Ranch week. |
