Six 1890's row houses, once the homes of mill workers during North Adams industrial heyday, are given new life as the Porches Inn. As the first hotel to open near the upstart Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, the completely renovated buildings, which are linked by two long front porches, have been cleverly redesigned to accommodate 47 distinctive guest rooms and suites.
Each of the six buildings has been painted a different vivid color. Behind the main reception house, a separate "ping pong" building houses a game room and sauna. Inside the Inn, the public rooms feature a living room with fireplace, den, a breakfast room, small gift shop and meeting room accommodating 20 people.
Four color schemes are featured in the guest rooms and suites. Bead board walls are painted terracotta, pale blueberry, celery green and sage green to complement wooden floors that have been painted olive green, red, pumpkin and buttercup respectively. Wool area rugs further highlight the floors. An extensive collection of lamps from the 1940s and 1950s, etched glass mirrors and vintage vinyl upholstered furniture in bright colors are mixed with an eclectic assortment of vintage furniture. The large bathrooms feature either Jacuzzi-style tubs or claw foot bathtubs with separate showers. All bathrooms boast slate floors and distinctive mirror frames.
The Porches Inn offers a complimentary European style buffet breakfast featuring fresh bread, cheese, yogurt, fruits, cereals & more. Guests who prefer to eat in their rooms may have breakfast delivered in a galvanized metal lunch box, modeled after those used by the workers who originally lived on the property.
A Historic Hotels of America member, the Porches Inn is an eye-opening synthesis of contemporary and retro design. |
