Our history
As we sailed along the coast 10 years ago, we discovered this old ruin. The physiognomy of the construction was fascinating as it stood isolated amidst a wide-open space, slightly sloped towards the sea. The land around the ruin was unique for the area and flowed into a rocky coastline, which appeared to by less steep and rough than the land preceding or following it.
Retaining something of the original impression of the place became quite a challenge. At first, we envisioned it as being a holiday home, but once all the rooms had been laid out with their own bathrooms, we realized we could not keep the place all to ourselves. So we set out to make it accessible to our friends.
The most difficult aspect was preserving the quality and charm of the original structure. In the end, we manage to make the ruin habitable.
One of the main topics of concern was air conditioning. After countless discussions, we decided it was better to keep the distinctive sensation of a hot night than to cool the place artificially like everybody else would. As for experiencing the cold, we had other thoughts: We definitely decided to install a heating system in order to make the house tolerable during the colder months.
The product of our musings is the Ca’ P’a – una casa privata.
The Rooms
There are just 6 rooms in Ca’ P’a: 2 suites and a double room on the 1st floor, and 3 double rooms and a large terrace on the 2nd floor. The suites are comprised of two connected rooms, whereby one is positioned in the centre of the house and therefore a little darker and cooler. Every room is 4.30 meters high with a domed ceiling, stone floor and a view of the sea.Real-Life Picture Postcards – Positano peeks out from behind a rocky outcrop. The sky and sea change by the minute while the Faraglioni di Capri remain unchanged at the centre of the picture with the Isole dei Galli on their left.
In the centre of each room you will find a glass bookcase cube holding around 130 volumes. Each of the 6 rooms has its own library that focuses on a different field of interest: art, architecture, nature, history, philosophy and psychology.
The Garden
The opportunity to spend the entire day outside is one of the great advantages of life by the sea. The garden serves as an extension of the house. We were lucky enough to have the services of the famous Belgian landscape architect Jacques Wirtz for the design of our “open house” in a 5000 sqm space with sculpted hedges, greenery, fountains and stone benches.
Do not be disappointed if the garden does not seem to have already reached its full glory: Prince Pückler once said: “It takes 150 years for a park to reach its ultimate splendour.” We’re trying to get there in 5! By next year, you’ll be able to recognize the developments.
Plans for the garden include a seawater swimming pool. Those who prefer to take a dip in the open sea can access the beach and lounge chairs by a series of steps descending the cliffs. |
