If you are longing for an island retreat that resembles a British country inn, try Hastings House, one hour from Victoria, British Columbia, on Salt Springs Island.
The inn is comprised of five buildings with fifteen lovely accommodations, each individually decorated. All accommodations are replete with antiques and Laura Ashley or Sanderson floral fabrics. There is a snugly eiderdown quilt on every bed and most accommodations feature a fireplace.
Mr. Hastings, who styled it after his 14th century home in Sussex, built the Manor House in 1941. The living room has a massive fireplace, where guests gather for afternoon tea or sherry before dinner in the wood-paneled dining room.
Dinner is a five-course gourmet delight, which might feature the local lamb for which Salt Springs Island is famous. On its own 30 acres, Hastings House grows fresh produce and herbs, and these enhance every meal. Upon returning to your room, you will find the bed turned down, and a chocolate sheep on the pillow.
A hamper with hot coffee and freshly baked scones is delivered to the room in the morning. Full breakfast in the dining room might include fruit from the garden and eggs fresh from the hen house. Luncheon is served to in-house guests, and the inn hosts a sumptuous Sunday brunch.
Salt Springs Island, an artist's colony similar to Provincetown in the 1920s, can be reached by ferry from Victoria or Vancouver. Regular float plane service docks five minutes away from the inn. Float planes or helicopters, which land on the premises, may be chartered. Hastings House can accommodate up to 12 persons for executive retreats.
A minimum stay of two nights on weekends and three nights on holiday weekends is required.
