When Calgary takes off its cowboy boots and Olympic jackets, one finds a sleek, friendly city, proud enough of its heritage to preserve the pioneer architecture, willing to fund a spacious downtown performing arts center, and capable of producing an efficient twenty-first-century light-rail system.
Guests of the 32-year-old International Hotel find 250 recently remodeled suites, attractively decorated in light colors with contemporary furnishings. Each has a private bath, one or two bedrooms, bar area, dining nook, and large living room.
Upon entering the atrium-style lobby, the impression is one of uncluttered calm with well-orchestrated hotel management. A knowledgeable concierge takes care of everything, and even knows the origins of the modern art. New additions include high-speed elevators.
The 4th Avenue Bar is actually a tri-level creation, with sports deck on the top, solarium and bar at mid-level, and an executive club room in the lower reaches. The 4th Avenue Cafe is "today" in feel, with peach, soft green and ivory dominating. Small bouquets of fresh flowers and splashes of color add to the informal atmosphere.
The location is ideal for walking to shopping, theaters, and the intriguing Glenbow Museum to view their impressive collection of Eskimo and Indian artifacts. Any trip to Calgary should begin with a visit to the observation deck of the 626-foot-high Calgary Tower. From this lofty perch you'll be able to see Olympic sites as well as a panorama of mountains and prairies stretching out as far as you can see. Other attractions worth visiting are the Planetarium and Science Center and the Calgary Zoo.
The International Hotel is a member of Sterling Hotels and Resorts. |
