It is unknown what year this stunning residence was built, but there are writings about the Relais Della Rovere dating back to the 11th Century. For several centuries it was a prosperous Benedictine abbey - as evidenced by the valuable building materials and its architectural layout. In the late 1400s the complex caught the eye of Cardinale Giuliano Della Rovere, who later became Pope Julius II and patron to Michelangelo. Relais Della Rovere became his personal residence and though its a bit less monumental than the Sistine Chapel, it is every bit as refined, remaining the home for local bishops over the next 400 years.
The 30 guest accommodations at the Relais are in the main villa and the adjoining convent. Hardwood floors, fresh flowers, and simple yet elegant furnishings are hallmarks of this charming residence. Guestrooms include mini-bars, safes, air conditioning, satellite TV, private bathroom with stall shower and hair dryers. Eighteen superior double rooms are noticeably larger and equipped with whirlpool baths. Five luxury double rooms are furnished with expensive antiques and three junior suites feature a sitting area and can comfortably accommodate three or four people. Several accommodations have two private bathrooms with whirlpool baths.
Relais della Rovere's location is perfect for day trips to almost any part of Tuscany. Sienna and San Gimignano are just down the road, and Florence, a mere 45-minute drive. Arezzo, Cortona, Montepulciano, Volterra and Montalcino are only slightly farther. After exploring the winding roads of Chianti or Florence, guests can return to the Relais and enjoy a leisurely swim in the pool or a soothing treat of vin Santo and biscotti.
Enjoy a fabulous dinner at the restaurant, Enoteca il Cardinale, or choose from an amazing selection of restaurants, trattorie and pizzerias in the surrounding area.
The peaceful atmosphere that pervaded the abbey 900 years ago continues to rejuvenate those who visit Relais Della Rovere.
